Equity is a big broad concept. What does it mean?
There are two ways to think about equity; the traditional structural issues surrounding equitable access. Does everyone have equal access to information and communication technology? If not, what are barriers to access? What role does the education system play in facilitating access?
The other way that we think about equity is beyond those traditional structural issues of access and considers the way students use technology.

IT IS INTENDED FOR THOSE EDUCATION PROFESSIONALS WHO WILL BE JOINING US FOR THE WORKSHOP, IN PERSON; BUT ALSO FOR THOSE WHO ARE INTERESTED IN PARTICIPATING IN A DIALOGUE SURROUNDING THE CHALLENGES OF HOW TO USE TECHNOLOGY WITHIN EDUCATION EQUITABLY.

What are we doing?
For the past 4 years, Dr. Dianne Looker has been principal investigator on a major SSHRC funded grant studying elements of the digital divide in Canada. The Equity and Technology Research Alliance is a project that involves researchers and partners from three major universities in Nova Scotia (Dalhousie, Acadia and MSVU), policy officials from the Nova Scotia and Nunavut departments of education, educators, and representatives from the African-Canadian and First Nations communities. The project also involved researchers from South Africa and Australia.
So the project is in the wrap-up phase and Dr. Looker is not the type of researcher that is happy to just have her research end up on a shelf where it will not be as accessible to the very individuals who made it possible... that is, the participants. So with a series of INE Outreach Grants, Dr. Looker and the Equity and Technology team have organized a series of innovative dissemination activities.
This workshop is one of those outreach activities. The blog will go "live" at 10:30 AM when Charlene Croft and Ted Naylor begin blogging the discussions and interactions throughout the day. We encourage everyone who is interested to be interactive, we will be sharing comments left on the blog with those participating in the workshop. Further, workshop participants will also be encouraged to "blog" their own thoughts and ideas on using technology to enhance classroom equity during the day.
